Mexico has a rich history spanning ancient civilisations like the Maya and the Aztecs. You will have the opportunity to explore historic sites, from the majestic Pyramids of Teotihuacan to the bustling streets of Mexico City’s Centro Histórico. Mexican culture is also famous for its vibrant festivals, such as the colourful Day of the Dead (DÃa de los Muertos) and the lively celebrations of Cinco de Mayo. These cultural experiences provide a fantastic backdrop for learning and personal growth.
Family life
Mexican families are typically large and extend beyond the immediate family.
Your host family will become an important part of your exchange experience. They will involve you in family activities and traditions, take you to local landmarks, museums, and markets, and give you ample opportunity to immerse yourself in Mexican life.
You’ll have the chance to savour the delicious Mexican cuisine and enjoy delectable delights such as tacos, tamales, and enchiladas. Meal time is a favourite part of the day where families and friends come together to prepare meals, converse and enjoy each other’s company. Mexico is a nation full of wonderful celebrations and festivals, and you’ll have the opportunity to experience these during your stay.

School
School in Mexico offers the opportunity to improve your Spanish language skills and gain a deeper understanding of Mexican culture from your classmates.
A typical day at a Mexican high school begins around 8:00am and ends around 2:00pm, giving you plenty of time to explore after school. Class schedules vary, with breaks for snacks and socialising.
Students often wear uniforms and can bring lunch or purchase meals from on-campus cafeterias. School is taught in Spanish, and there is a focus on academics with various subjects and extracurricular activities available. You can participate in sports, music, dance, and various specialist clubs, allowing you to explore your passions and make new friends.

Teenage life
Teenage life in Mexico is vibrant, culturally rich and family focused.

Teenagers enjoy a robust social life, often hanging out with friends after school and on weekends. Sports are particularly popular, with soccer being a favourite, along with basketball and baseball. Social interactions include gatherings at local parks, malls, and each other’s homes.

Mexican food is a delicious exploration of flavours! A delectable blend of Indigenous and Spanish cultures with beans, corn, tortillas and chillies forming the basis of many recipes. These days, the traditional recipes have additional ingredients such as meat and cheese.

Can I choose a specific city or region for my high school student exchange placement?
You can tell us your preferred city or region for your high school exchange program, and some destinations offer a Select Program that allows you to choose a specific area.
We will always do our best to consider your preference, but placements depend on host family availability and suitability, so the location cannot be guaranteed.
Students are matched and placed with families from across the destination country.
We prioritise the things you and the host family have in common over the specific location. To make the most of your program, it’s important to be flexible and open-minded.
Will I need a visa for my high school student exchange program, and who organises it?
Visa requirements depend on your destination and the length of your high school exchange program, and if a visa is required, we guide you to start the application process.
In many European Union countries, a visa is not required for short programs under 90 days. For programs longer than three months, a visa may be necessary. If you do need a visa, we will help you begin the application process and ensure you understand the steps involved. Visa costs are not included in the program fee.
