Are you passionate about supporting young people and excited to learn about other cultures?
As a Students of the World Volunteer Local Coordinator, you’ll play a key role in the high school exchange experience, acting as a mentor, guide, and friend to an international high school student living in your community while on exchange.
Some of our volunteers have personal experience with exchange programs – perhaps as an exchange student or host parent, or maybe you are just interested in other cultures and languages​.
None of these things are essential and no matter your background, if you’re a responsible adult with a big heart and an open mind, you can make a real difference in a young person’s life and have a lot of fun along the way!
Your role is...
To look out for the well-being of both the exchange student and their host family throughout the program.​
In practical terms, that means staying in regular touch and being there when they need support.
Through this process, you become like family to the student – someone they’ll never forget for your kindness and guidance. And just like a proud aunt or uncle, you’ll watch them grow and thrive during their time here!
Regular Check-Ins
You will check in with the student and their host family at least once a month, typically through a face-to-face visit or a friendly chat over the phone. These consistent check-ins help ensure everything is on track.
During these chats, you’ll ask how things are going at school and home, celebrate their successes, and nip any little concerns in the bud.
We provide an online questionnaire to guide you so you can easily record the responses and submit the completed form to us.
Ongoing Support
Beyond the monthly catch-ups, you’ll be on call as an extended family member for your student and host family.
If the student feels homesick or confused by Aussie customs, you’ll be there to offer advice or simply listen. If the host family has questions or a challenge arises, you’ll guide them with patience and understanding.
In short, you’re the go-to person for both parties whenever they need additional support.
Building Bridges
Part of your role is helping bridge cultural differences.
You might help the student and host family understand each other’s perspectives—whether by explaining Australian slang and school routines to the student or encouraging the family to learn about the student’s home traditions.
This creates a supportive environment where everyone feels understood and included.
Liaison with our team
You’ll also keep the Students of the World team updated on the student’s progress.
If any serious issues come up, you’ll coordinate with our staff to resolve them quickly.
Essentially, you’re our eyes and ears on the ground, ensuring the exchange is a success for everyone.

All of our Local Coordinators receive training before being assigned a student. We’ll walk you through everything you need to know.
You’ll have access to all resources through our online systems, and our supportive team are ready to answer questions, including 24/7 emergency support.​
